To Eyre Is Human, To Drink Bourbon Divine!

October 4, 2014

We awoke in panic, a loud crash reaching our ears on the morning of our departure to Bardstown, Kentucky. Believing someone was in the house, Jason bravely left our room and headed toward the kitchen; In cowardice, I followed slowly behind him. Someone had most certainly intruded--our cat, upon our kitchen counter. Thanks, Fred.

Jason picked up the items knocked over (new toys we purchased for our cats) and we quickly and groggily went back to bed. After a short while, we awoke (much more peacefully, I might add) and began packing for our trip. Yes, packing. We had finished laundry the night before but were unable to actually pack. Two hours after we originally planned on leaving, we said good-bye to our adorable cats and left for Kentucky.

We made our way to Quick Trip to fill my tires with air and grab our .99 drinks. This was the first year we were able to take my car for a long trip, since I recently traded in my Tiberon for a newer Honda Fit Sport. Jason was kind enough to drive to Kentucky, even though he is the one who usually drives on our vacations. He offered to so that we might be able to read a book on the way. We picked Jane Eyre. I had read it once in high school for a book report, but it was Jason's first time reading it.

After a few hours, we stopped at a Wendy's for lunch. Jason ate their new pulled pork burger and I a potato and chili. Scrumptious and cheap! Just one state above Georgia and fall could already be sensed in the air. Even the Wendy's was decorated for Halloween. Floating/bloody ears were dangling from a fake tree. Pictures that, if seen from certain spots, could transform into monsters. It was epic--for a Wendy's. While we ate a small, young family walked over to the nearby ear tree to sit down. Their little girl, not older than 6, began crying and begged for seating away from the floating earlobes. We laughed, quite a bit.

Now no longer hungry, we returned to the long stretch of road and our classic novel. Although Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre is not a conventional love story, reading it makes me all the more thankful for my relationship to Jason. I love that he and I do so much together and can talk about anything with each other. We read books on trips and visit different places every year for our anniversary. He's fun, smart, easy to talk to, and challenging all at the same time. Reading books like this with him means a lot to me because it causes us to talk about other important aspects of life, along with the fun and goofy parts. Even though Jason and I are extremely similar in many ways, we are never board with each other.

Time went by rather quickly in our small car. Soon we passed the Kentucky line and found our way to the Hampton Inn. Welcome to Bardstown. We drove into the parking lot and heard the loud rumble of a motorcycle. Strike that--of roughly 20 motorcycles. What's the word for a grouping of motorcyclists? A jerk of motorcyclists? Yeah, that sounds right.

We parked and walked into the extremely busy hotel lobby. We took our place behind a jerk of roughly 3 or 4. We watched as the front desk attendant asked the man checking in how he would be paying. Without a word, the man left his luggage and walked out the front door. The attendant looked at us quizzically. The three of us exchanged a look of confusion. He very gracefully looked to one of the bikers remaining and asked "What did he say?" She paid for him and then they left.

When we checked in, the attendant informed us that we were the first person he'd seen that day that wasn't part of the wedding group staying there. Not sure if that means the bikers are part of that... Luckily when I reserved the rooms I wrote a note saying it was our anniversary and we wanted a quiet room. It was wonderful! Last room on the highest floor. Completely and utterly quiet. Also next to the food machine. Always a plus.

We settled in the room and then went to dinner. We decided on Old Talbott Tavern. When finding a place to park, I had to go over a large dip in the parking lot to enter. We heard a bump from my car and got out to make sure it was okay. Wish I had gotten a picture to post here, but we were sort of distracted. Apparently the dip bumped something on my car. Although not a scratch was found, the right fog light was literally hanging by it's wires. Jason found where a screw had fallen and released the light. We unplugged it, place my light in the back seat and went to dinner. Just have to screw it back on later, I guess. Haha! Here is a picture of the restaurant:

Originally we tried to stay here for our trip, since it is also a B&B. However, after calling roughly 5 times with no response, we chose another hotel. The restaurant experience, however, was amazing! Below are pictures of the food we ate:

 The appetizer: bourbon meatballs. Delicious!

Jason's Kentucky Fried Chicken! The man sitting near us seriously turned toward Jason and said "I should have gotten that!"

My Kentucky Burgoo. Very spicy and very good!

Jason eating his food in this 1779 tavern, the same place Lincoln, Daniel Boone, Washington Irving stayed at. Also this is where Washington Irving wrote one of his short stories and where Jesse James was shot. It was a beautiful restaurant. Old doorways, creaky wood floors, and a brick fireplace.

Above is a flight of bourbon shots from nearby distilleries. The woman sitting nearby us also looked over and said "Look, he got that." She said this to the man who also wanted Jason's chicken. When they finished their own food, the man turned to Jason and said "good luck" as he smiled and walked out.

After devouring our food, we headed back to the hotel for the night. Here is the last picture of the day, Jason at the hotel:

End of Day 1.

  1. The food looks great. After 5 shots, let me guess who drove back to the hotel. Which distillery won you over?

  2. Haha! Yeah, Jason was not driving--although he holds his bourbon very well! His favorite bourbon shot was the Four Roses. We're going to tour all the distilleries this week. Super excited!
