Double Bubble Toil and Trouble

October 12th, 2010

We awoke, dressed, and quickly headed to the mall.  Jason and I have never been those people who hang out at malls.... I find it very funny that we've been doing this for a huge portion of our days on vacation.  After getting dunkin donuts and scarfing down breakfast, we quickly called a taxi to take us into Salem.  The entire ride into Salem our cab driver talked about his horrible puppies that eat and chew on everything.   Quite a funny man.  He dropped us off at the Old Town Hall.  It's a lovely spot... a giant brick building with yellow fall leaves surrounding the stone pathways.  This is where we were to see "Cry Innocent."  It was a very funny play about Bridget Bishop, the first woman accused of witchcraft.  Jason and I saw as they arrested her outside the courthouse and quickly followed them into the town hall.  While watching the play, an actor chose to sit next to Jason while participating in the play.  At one point he taped Jason on the shoulder and said "She's a liar!"  Jason responded with, "Yea she is!" Next thing I knew that man stuck his tongue out at her and she was glaring at him and us.  She was a very good actress who kept hitting on all the men... including a 70 year old guy.  He seemed pretty flattered.

We bought tickets to see the witch history museum.  It was fairly good... not amazing, however.  We then had lunch at an awesome, yet expensive, hot dog place called the Boston Dog Co.  Very good.  After lunch we headed to the Old Burying Ground.  This is the first or second oldest cemetery in the country.  It was really cool.  We saw the gravestone of a man who was on the Mayflower and the gravestone of the honorable John Hathorne... the famous judge during the witch trials.  John Hathorne is also the ancestor of Nathaniel Hawthorne.  Next to the cemetery is the witch memorial.  On each bench was listed the name of a executed person, date of death, and method of execution of suspected witches.  Many flowers were placed on the benches to remember those people.

Jason and I walked around Derby Sq, the Commons, and numerous other streets (as we kept getting lost).  We visited the mall at Derby Sq and looked around numerous witch shops, such as the Broom Closet.  We both are super excited to buy a wand later this week.  We walked to a bookstore after shopping and called a taxi to return to our hotel.  We met a very fascinating woman who informed us that she smokes weed.  After saying this, however, she realized it sounded badly and assured us she doesn't even know where to buy it or how much it costs.  She was very interesting.  Very open, but pretty entertaining.  Once back at the hotel we ate dinner in the hotel restaurant.  We split a hamburger and a turkey sandwich.  It was scrumptious.  It was all in all a pretty good first day in Salem.
